Get to Know the Programs

Washington, D.C., and its surrounding areas offer a wealth of music education programs designed to make learning music accessible to all, regardless of background or financial means. Here are some notable organizations providing free or equitable music education opportunities:

DC Youth Orchestra Program (DCYOP)

  • Founded in 1960, DCYOP is the city's premier youth orchestra, enrolling over 600 students annually, aged 4–18.

DCYOP offers nine different ensembles designed to meet students at every stage of their musical journey. From beginner string and wind ensembles to the most advanced full symphonic orchestras, young musicians are given the support and training they need to thrive both on and off stage.

  • Tuition covers lessons/sectionals, rehearsals, concerts, evaluations and master classes.

While the average cost per student is $1400 per year, DCYOP subsidizes tuition for all students to make its programs affordable and accessible. DCYOP offers additional financial assistance to all students on a sliding scale and a scholarship experience for intermediate and advanced students.
